Reforming Multiblitz Studio Lights

About

WHO WE ARE...

MULTIBLITZ was founded in 1948 in Cologne, Germany by inventor and entrepreneur Dr. D. A. Mannesmann. Since 1973, Multiblitz is managed by engineer and CEO Hans-Gerd Wulms and is one of the world’s leading companies for studio lighting. At the Photokina 1976, Multiblitz introduced the industry’s first compact studio flash the MINISTUDIO 202. Mutliblitz's 80s product line included PROFILITE and VARIOLITE studio flashes and MAGNOLITE generators followed by PROFILUX studio flashes in the 90s. Multiblitz's headquarters and production facility is located in Cologne, Germany.

WHERE ARE MULTIBLITZ PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED?

MULTIBLITZ studio flashes are conceived, designed, and manufactured in our facility in Cologne, Germany. Premium German engineering - Made in Germany since 1948.

Products

PROFILUX, PROFILUX PLUS, PROFILUX CLASSIC? - I'M CONFUSED!

The current PROFILUX PLUS units are the successor to the very succesful pre-2008 PROFILUX (now called PROFILUX CLASSIC) units. The current PROFILUX units are named PROFILUX ECO outside North America and are the more affordable and simpler solution in comparison to the PROFILUX PLUS.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROFILUX AND PROFILUX PLUS UNITS?

PROFILUX PLUS units are battery operable with our PROPAC battery packs and have a voltage range of 100-260V. They can be operated on any power grid worldwide. The new PROFILUX units have a voltage range of 110-130V and are purely operable on a 120V grid.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN P-TYPE AND V-TYPE MOUNTS?

Over the last few decades, two kind of MULTIBLITZ studio flashes have evolved. Smaller units with small housings and the P-Type bayonet mount, and larger, more powerful units with the larger V-Type bayonet mount.

WHAT UNITS FEATURE THE P-TYPE BAYONET MOUNT?

Minilite, Profilite, Profilite Compact, Compactlite, Digilite, Profilux, Profilux Plus, Digi X, Pro X, Compact Plus.

WHAT UNITS FEATURE THE V-TYPE BAYONET MOUNT?

Ministudio, Studiolite Compact, Variolite, Varilux, Varispot, Xenolux, X-System.

WHAT IS POCAN®?

POCAN® is a glass fiber enhanced compound that offers a high heat resistance, strength and hardness, as well as excellent slip properties and high abrasion resistance, good resistance to chemicals, low susceptibility to stress cracking and low moisture absorption. All stress and heat bearing parts of Multiblitz studio lights are made out of POCAN®.

WHAT IS THE GUIDE NUMBER (GN)?

While the Watt second is often used to compare flash output of studio lights, a more precise method to compare flash output is the Guide Number (GN), which is the product of flash-to-subject distance and the f-stop of the aperture that will correctly expose a digital sensor with a specified sensitivity and was introduced by Multiblitz founder Dr. D.A. Mannesmann. Usually, the GN is measured at 1m (3 ft.) / 2m (6 ft.) at ISO 100, with a standard reflector in the range of 50°. A lot of manufacturers, try to conveniently "tune" the GN by using for instance a narrow angled light modifier or invented terms like "true" or "effective" Watt second. For decades, Multiblitz calculates the GN of our studio lights with a 50°, 7" silver standard reflector (FILNOS) at ISO 100 and 2m (6 ft.) to minimize measuring inaccuracies.

Reforming Multiblitz Studio Lights

WHY DO I NEED TO "REFORM" THE UNITS?

The most vital parts of an electronic flash unit are the capacitors. Capacitors have the nasty habit to lose their key function over time if they are not used frequently: their capacity. We recommend to reform your MULTIBLITZ studio flash before you use it for the first time or if you haven't used it in the last 3 months. This is not a specific characteristic of MULTIBLITZ units, it's a physical property that every capacitor has.

HOW DO I "REFORM" THE UNITS?

To reform your MULTIBLITZ studio flash, do the following: (Hint: Do not trigger while reforming, it defeats the purpose. The modeling lamp does not need to be turned on.)

  1. Do not trigger while reforming! It defeats the purpose.
  2. Connect the unit to a power source.
  3. Turn on your MULTIBLITZ unit.
  4. Set your unit to f-stop 1.
  5. Increase the f-stop by 1 every 15 minutes until you are at the highest f-stop.
  6. Leave your unit connected to the power source for another hour.
  7. The capacitors are now reformed.
